ITINERARY

Duration: 15 days

Day 1 : Arrival in Bogotá

Welcome to Colombia! An assistant from our agency Intercultural Tours will be waiting for you at the airport to transfer you to your hotel

Day 2 : Flight to Pereira – Transfer to Filandia

We will take a flight towards the Coffee Region. After arriving at the Pereira airport, a private vehicle will take us through beautiful subtropical landscapes to the colorful town of Salento, the heart of Colombia’s coffee region.

After checking in at the designated hotel, a short walk will take us to a Colombian farm to enjoy an explanatory tour of the production process of the plants representative of the region. Our local guide will explain the planting process, the different domesticated and hybrid species, the production process, and finally the roasting and grinding of the coffee. We will return by Jeep Willys (a traditional vehicle of the region) to Filandia to spend the night

Day 3 : In search of the howler monkey in the Barbas–Bremen Natural Reserve

We will arrive at the Barbas–Bremen Reserve by local Jeep. It is a meeting with nature and with your specialized guide representing the Reserve, who will explain the most interesting characteristics of the region.

Next, we will take a walk of about 3 hours (4 km), during which, with some luck, we may see some howler monkeys.

This place is one of the areas most protected by the national government due to its ecological and environmental importance.

Then, we will visit the Bejuco and Basket Interpretation Center with our guide to learn about the history and the manufacturing processes of traditional coffee baskets. How about learning to make your own basket according to local traditions? Overnight in adapted accommodation on a rural farm.

Day 4 : Cocora Valley

This morning, we set out to visit the Cocora Valley. The journey begins with a Jeep Willys ride to Salento and then to the Cocora Valley. We will then begin our hike through the magnificent valley of wax palms. These palms are highly cherished by Colombians, as they were among the first plants to become an emblem of the country. These fabulous plants were already mentioned in the travel descriptions of the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt in the 19th century. Their size fascinates all visitors. These gigantic palms reach heights of 50 to 60 meters, making them the tallest palm trees in the world.

Day 5 : Visit of Salento – Flight to Cartagena de Indias

In the morning, we will take a tour of the town of Salento to discover its streets decorated with colorful doorways and balconies. We will reach the town’s viewpoint to admire the beautiful rolling green mountains. Then, we will travel to Pereira to take a flight to Cartagena de Indias. Upon arrival, we will take a short walk in the surroundings and enjoy watching the sunset over the Caribbean Sea.

Day 6 : Cartagena

This day will be dedicated to visiting Cartagena, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This port city located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia features a series of fortifications that extend along the sea. We will visit the San Felipe Castle to learn about the stories of invasions and resistance during the colonial period. Then we will head to La Popa, a hill where a religious sanctuary is located and from which there is a panoramic view of the city.

We will finish the visit in the historic center to discover the secrets of its history hidden beneath its countless balconies, walls, and narrow stone streets.

Day 7 : Cartagena – Santa Marta

Transfer by bus or shared vehicle to Santa Marta. Upon arrival, we will change vehicles to reach the entrance of Tayrona National Park, where we will spend the night in a comfortable accommodation with a swimming pool included.

Day 8 : Santa Marta – Parque Tayrona

Transfer by local bus to the access called Calabazo. This entrance is less frequented and allows for a route away from the large crowds of tourists who seek to access the beautiful beaches of the park. We will take a walk of about 3 to 4 hours to finally reach Cabo San Juan. Here, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (the highest coastal mountain in the world) plunge into the sea, like the fingers of a hand between which vast bays and beaches of unique beauty are formed. The white sandy beaches are bordered by shrubs and mangroves. After the hike, the place offers a good swim in the crystal-clear blue sea.

For those seeking scenic beauty and relaxation, Tayrona Natural Park is the perfect place.

Day 9 : Parque Tayrona

This day will be free to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Tayrona National Park. After lunch, we return to the main entrance of the park and then to the accommodation near the Reserve.

Day 10 : Visit to Gotsezhy

We will begin a journey along an unpaved road until we reach the Wiwa indigenous community called Gotsezhy. The trip will take about 2 hours from our accommodation.

Upon arrival at the village of Gotsezhy, we will take a short ecological walk of about 20 minutes. Along the way, we will observe a large number of Wiwa indigenous people who live in this community, as well as the village school and many traditional houses (indigenous bohíos).

We will be welcomed by the Mamo, the spiritual leader of Gotsezhy, who, together with the local guide, will lead us to discover the spiritual path they proudly preserve.

Then, we will continue along an ecological trail filled with lush vegetation and a magical waterfall, where we can enjoy a refreshing swim. We will return to the community and have lunch with a menu based on local products. Afterwards, the Wiwa women will present an exhibition of traditional crafts from the Wiwa culture, made with fique fiber that the indigenous people extract from the maguey plant.

At the end of the day, we will return on foot to the village of Gotsezhy, where the vehicle will be waiting to take us back to the city of Santa Marta. In the evening, we will take a comfortable overnight bus to Bucaramanga.

Day 11 : Cañón del Chicamocha – Barichara

After arriving in Bucaramanga, we take the road that will lead us to the city of Barichara. Heading south for 120 km, we cross the Chicamocha Canyon. This immense canyon is crossed by the Chicamocha River, from which it takes its name. The landscape here is very mountainous and breathtaking. If time permits, we will take the 6.3-kilometer cable car. Then, we will stop in the town of Curití, where the fique or agave fiber industry has developed. Finally, we will arrive in the beautiful town of Barichara.

Day 12 : Barichara – Caminata hacia Guane

In the morning, as early as possible, we will set out on a 5.5 km walk between Barichara and Guane that will take us back in time. It is the perfect moment to reconnect with the natural sounds of a semi-arid forest landscape. This section of the stone trail was built by the Guane indigenous people in order to connect their villages.

Upon arrival in Guane, we will visit the quiet streets and especially a viewpoint that will impress us with the vast beauty of the mountains. We will also visit the small village museum, which displays a series of fossils and some pre-Columbian remains found in the region.

Upon returning to Barichara, we will tour the village, where the ochre of the surrounding hills contrasts strongly with the white walls of the town. Here, stone is cut and houses are built using local techniques. Since its foundation in 1705, its inhabitants have kept alive the ancestral traditions of producing adobe, tiles, bricks, and terracotta slabs.

We will pass by the cemetery, the church, and finally the Piedra Colgante viewpoint to take beautiful souvenir photos.

Day 13 : Barichara – Eccehomo – Villa de Leyva

We head to Villa de Leyva (approx. 190 km) towards the south of the Eastern Andes. Leaving Barichara, we pass through some very narrow passages before admiring the immense sugarcane fields as we approach our destination. The landscape here looks like an emerald green carpet.

The cultivation of sugarcane is the source of panela, an unrefined sugar obtained by boiling sugarcane juice. Then we will arrive at the Ecce Homo convent, a Dominican monument built during the colonial period. After checking into our hotel, we will visit Villa de Leyva, an emblematic city of the Colombian Andes founded in 1572. It is located in the heart of a valley whose history dates back 150 million years. Geographically, this city lies at the bottom of an ancient sea, whose only evidence is the remains of the only Kronosaurus found on the continent and other marine reptiles that lived here more than 100 million years ago. We will stop at the Fossil Museum.

Day 14 : Villa de Leyva – Bogota

In the morning, we will begin with a visit to the famous Casa Terracota, a local architectural curiosity. It is the largest baked clay house in existence. The local guides will explain the characteristics and particularities of its construction.

Then, we will depart towards the small and colorful town of Ráquira, where pottery is traditionally fired. We will be able to visit a potter’s workshop to observe their way of working.

Afterwards, to reach Bogotá, we will travel along a road surrounded by mountains and small lagoons. We will pass through villages where string instruments are played and where locals live on haciendas and offer restaurants serving rural cuisine.

Day 15 : Visita a Bogotá – Vuelo Internacional

You will visit the historic center of Bogotá with a local guide. The first neighborhood we will visit is La Candelaria, which is famous for its colonial past. We will also pass by Plaza Bolívar and the Botero Museum. Next, we will visit the Gold Museum, where tradition and modernity coexist, with ancestral works and contemporary design. To finish, we will make a brief visit to the flower and fruit market before the transfer to the airport for your international flight.

  • Spending the night with minimal comfort elements can be a small adventure; however, the human warmth of the inhabitants easily compensates for the lack of comfort to which we are accustomed in urban areas
  • Our experiences respect the local population, their customs and traditions; therefore, we recommend following the instructions of your guide so as not to break the intercultural harmony that we preserve
  • The best way to avoid the consumption and production of plastics is by avoiding their use. For this reason, we recommend having a canteen or a reusable bottle. We provide water to fill your bottles
